Week 4: CADing Name Cubes

First Fusion!

During this meeting, members created their first CAD models of the year: Name Cubes! Members were taught how to create a sketch, dimension lines, extrude, and write text in Fusion 360, allowing them to create cubes with their names on them. Afterwards, members were allowed to customize their designs, adding unique features.

Try it Yourself!

If you missed the meeting, here's a quick tutorial on how to create a Name Cube in Fusion 360!

  1. Open Fusion 360

  2. Create a sketch by clicking the sketch icon near the top left

  3. Select the orange flat x-axis plane

  4. Click on the rectangle tool, and click anywhere on the screen

  5. Type in 50 mm, then press tab and type 50 mm again, and then press Enter on your keyboard; you should now have a square

  6. Press E on your keyboard (shortcut for the extrude tool), and click on the square

  7. Drag up the blue arrow that appears, and type in 50 mm

  8. Press Enter on your keyboard; you should now have a cube

  9. Create another sketch on the front of the cube

  10. Use the text tool under Create and type in your name on the right and press ok

  11. Right click on the text and click on "Explode Text"

  12. Press E on your keyboard again and click on each of the letters of your name

  13. Pull the blue arrow that appears into the cube 5 mm

  14. Press Enter and you're done! Feel free to play around with the other tools and customize your cube!

Name Cube Designs

As stated before, members successfully created their name cubes, but they wanted to go beyond our expectations. A couple of members started to add different features to their cubes, creating amazing designs!
